The
Corrs to play Freedom concert...
Rock superstars REM will be joined by the Irish
supergroup The Corrs and Spice Girl
Mel B among the acts who will play at a special
concert in London to mark South Africa Freedom
Day later this month, it was confirmed last night.
Former South African President Nelson Mandela
will be among those outside the South African High
Commission in Trafalgar Square to see the free concert
on April 29.
The spectacular has been organised to mark the seventh
anniversary of South Africa's first democratic elections
in 1994. The lineup will include a mix of South African
and international artists including Ladysmith Black
Mambazo, Hugh Masekela and Atomic Kitten.
The
concert, which will be benefit the Nelson Mandela
Children's Fund and The Prince's Trust,
will take place in front of 30,000 people.
Mr
Mandela told press in London yesterday, "I warmly
welcome the opportunity that our Freedom Day Concert
presents to acknowledge that extraordinary courage
and humanity of our people in overcoming the apartheid
system. It underlines that together we are building
a new and vibrant democracy with human rights firmly
at its core. Please save a seat for me in the Square
on April 20 so that I can join in the celebrations
and demonstrate the deep affection I have personally
for the people of the UK."
The Corrs are currently on a UK tour after opening
U2's tour in the US.
