Oasis
to tour with The Crowes...
Oasis star Noel Gallagher whose family
is from Ireland and whose father still lives here,
last year announced he was quitting overseas touring
- has told how he longs to return to the road with
volatile brother Liam. The star will head off
next month on a tour with his band co-headlining with
cult US group The Black Crowes.
And
he admitted he was attracted to doing the dates "because
we've got nothing on for the rest of the year. I'd
rather go and spend a month with these guys on the
road than sit at home watching television."
The
guitarist said of working alongside the Crowes, "Everybody
I've spoken to who's been in a band, they're going
`you lucky sods, man'. Everybody who's not in a band
is looking for the reason why it's going to fail.
We couldn't do something like this in England because
we're `the biggest band in England' and all that.
It's great that it's in America because we're just
going out and playing. We don't even know what set
we're going to play. It could be six songs off the
new album and six radio hits and that's it. Because
we've got nothing to do, we might think `let's bust
out some of the old songs'.''
Noel
said there was no grand scheme behind the plan to
hit the road with such an established act. "We
just said `we're going'. We love their band and they
love our band. We've got nothing to promote and we're
going to go because we can, you know? We don't sit
down in a dark smoky room and say `here's the master
plan'.''
Noel quit a world tour last year while the band was
in Europe after a physical bust-up with brother Liam.
He said he would play no more overseas dates but agreed
to play the handful of UK and Ireland stadium shows
last summer.
Noel
said: "When I got back to England last time I
thought `I'll do these stadium shows and then we're
not going to do anything'. Being away from home and
on the road is hard enough as it is anyway, but it's
different if every other night you're going to see
your friends whose band you actually do like and you
buy their records. As soon as this was mentioned I
was on the plane.''
The
potential for brotherly disharmony did not put him
off the dates. "I'm not going to go `because
you got on my nerves I'm going to blow a month on
the road with these guys'. I don't care. Liam can
be the biggest arsehole he wants for a month but he's
not going to spoil my tour.''
And he said he would be keen to bring the tour to
Europe eventually. "I would love to. I mean if
I was going on the road with any other band in a situation
like this, these would be the first.''
Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson said:
"We want to hang out with these guys and we want
to see their band every night. We like the camaraderie
and once we get into the groove of the road it's going
to be a great time.''
The tour kicks off in Las Vegas on May 11. News wire
