Gabriel
Byrne quitting acting...
The
women of Ireland will be squirming with delight at
the news that Gabriel Byrne is coming home.
Gabriel has been telling pals he's thinking of giving
up acting, and moving back to Dublin full-time to
set up his very own movie production office. Gabriel
is no stranger to the world of production ... he has
produced lots of films, including Jim Sheridan's
blockbuster In the Name of the Father.
After
veering from Satan to the priesthood in his last two
ventures, he may well be all hellfired and brimstoned
out. And after Hollywood Ireland must be refreshingly
religion free.
According to the tabloids, the pilot for his upcoming
TV sitcom, Madigan Men, was slated by the critics
in the States, which almost certainly means it will
be a hit. The series follows the trials of single
men living in New York, and is being promoted as the
male version of Sex in the City.
Byrne
... a single man living in New York ... originally
took the part to be nearer his two children, who live
there with ex-wife Ellen Barkin and her new
husband Ron Perelman. He had been based in
LA, and apparently isn't too keen on the Big Apple.
Last
year the local boy put down roots in Baggot Street
in Dublin near actor John Hurt. Byrne bought
a big house that his kids absolutely love, and that's
where he'll be living when he returns.
In the meantime, he's been spending a lot of time
in Ireland lately, bringing his son and daughter to
visit his mother in Galway for two weeks this month
and thrilling fans by bringing George Clooney
out to play at the Galway Races.
Before
Christmas, it was Arnie Schwarzenegger who
was Gabriel's Galway buddy. Which I thought was particularly
apposite - since True Lies are what we Irish
specialise in.
