Lord
of the Rings DVD a Smash...
Ireland got the first instalment of the Lord Of
The Rings series on Tuesday with the biggest one-day
sale for a DVD in the UK and Ireland, but just by
a whisker...
Figures
showed:
Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
already a box office smash sold 1.27 million copies
in its first day on the shelves yesterday in the UK
alone.
Harry
Potter And The Philosopher's Stone shifted 1.25
million copies when it was released earlier this year,
and 1.6 million by the end of the first week.
Many
stores around Ireland and the UK opened early with
queues forming outside a number of them especially
in London Tens of thousands of people had pre-ordered
copies of the film.
A
spokesman for the video's distributor said: "This
was a particularly remarkable achievement in view
of the Tuesday release date for Lord Of The Rings,
instead of the more usual weekend release date for
video and DVD titles. All major store groups have
reported unprecedented demand for the title and with
the heaviest trading days of the week still to go,
Lord of the Rings is being widely tipped to be the
biggest video and DVD release of all time."
The film stars Cate Blanchett, Liv Tyler, Sean
Bean, Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Ian Holm.
It is the first of a trilogy of films based on JRR
Tolkien's books.
The
DVD version has a preview trailer giving fans a taster
of the second, The Two Towers, which arrives
on the big screen later this year.
