Ireland
comes close to the Oscars...
Ireland failed to pick up any nominations at this
years Academy Awards when they were announced
in LA yesterday. However, a number of stars who recently
made appearance in the Irish film and theatre world
did make the cut. Goldie Hawn's daughter Kate
Hudson (who is currently staring in the Irish
film About Adam) was nominated for best supporting
actress for her role in Cameron Crows Almost Famous.
Academy
award winner Geoffrey Rush who treaded the
boards in Dublin's Tivoli Theatre last year
was nominated in the best actor category for his role
in Quills along with Tom Hanks, Russell
Crow and Ed Harris.
Juliette
Binoche received a nomination for best actress
for Chocolat where she acts with Johnny
Depp who plays and Irish gypsy. The film was also
nominated for the sought after Best Picture award
and Best previously written screenplay.
The
English actor Albert Finney, whose family are
Irish, was nominated for the best actor award for
his role in Erin Brockavich along with Julia
Roberts who was nominated for best actress.
Also
in the best actress category was Joan Allen
the actress who played the lead as the Irish journalist
Veronica Guerin in the film When The Sky Falls.
As
predicted Gladiator swept the board with 12
nominations including best actor, best supporting
actor, best picture, best director, best music, best
screenplay, best art directing, best sound, best costume
design, best film editing, best cinematography and
best visual effect.
