Debs Chic Rocks The IFTAs...
Considering the amount of time they devote to fashion showcases and style makeovers you'd think the lovely ladies out at RTE would have some idea of what frock to wear to this year's IFTAs Red Carpet? Sorry folks, most of them ended up looking like they were headed to a cheesy late 80s Debs...
Grainne Seoige, Sile Seoige |
We don't know what's going-on out in RTE's Donnybrook studios of late, but Jaaaysus lads, who is sticking these gaudy gunas on the station's alpha fabulous female presenters?
Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh |
Not like we're in anyway edu-ma-cated enough to be judging the ins-and-outs of female haute couture or anythin' folks - but for fecks-sake, someone could have told Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh she looked like Peig Sayers in that big black ball gown. Harsh.
Caroline Morahan |
In fact, as far as the RTE stalwarts go, none of them even came close to getting it right at the IFTAs. Serial red carpet offender Caroline Morahan, god-bless-her, still managed to get it oh-so-wrong despite years of presenting Off The Rails. Poor aul Brand Morahan ended-up looking like a cellophane wrapped turkey sandwich rather than the fashionista she so longs to be...
Sheena Keane |
Lets face it, all the ladies off RTE's busy afternoon schedule looked as if they dressed by their blind & incontinent Auntie Nora. The Seoige sisters, Sheena Keane, and Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh all went a bit too loud and lairy in the aul dress department.
Miriam O'Callaghan, Ryan Tubridy |
And even pairing them with their male counterparts didn't improve things... Poor Miriam O'Callaghan still came off looking like she raided the Pamela Scott bargain bin! And sticking her right beside stick-thin Ryan Tubridy in a wee dickie bow just made the whole thing scream: "We're Going To Our Debs!"
Kathryn Thomas |
For our money, as far as the RTE female presenters went, Kathryn Thomas was the best of a bad bunch. Although, her garment still smacked of yer Granny's old net curtains...
Saoirse Ronan, Sarah Bolger |
But all was not lost in the style-stakes for our Irish ladies last Saturday Night. Fine young things Saoirse Ronan and Sarah Bolger got it right in simple yet elegant black evening dresses... No blind Auntie Nora's here! Hell no.
Amanda Byram, Craig McMullen |
Former model now TV presenter Amanda Byram showed the rest of the red carpet how it should be done in a sleek and sexy strapless number. Her new fella Craig McMullen also kept-it-real and left the bowtie at home along with his 16-year-old Debutante alter ego.
Amy Huberman |
The Clinic actress Amy Huberman took the biggest risk with style last weekend going for a fresh low-cut above-the-knee frock, showing off her well toned pins. We kinda like this look mainly because she didn't have her media weary grumpy beau Brian O'Driscoll on her arm mucking-up the shot. Just smile Bri.
Fionnula Flanagan |
But the hands-down winner of best dressed lady surely must go to hot pensioner and 'Lost' actress Fionnula Flanagan, who showed by far the most cleavage on the night. And at 67 years young we're glad to say Fionnula can still turn a head or two. Just glad Colin Farrell wasn't around as he's partial to propositioning the older lady. Ahem.
Tommy Tiernan, Yvonne McMahon |
This year's IFTAs were held at The Burlington Hotel and apparently the free booze was allowed to flow unlike other years... Although, we've yet to review at the TV footage as the show went out late last Saturday night which, also just happened to be Valentine's Night. Hey, someone got lucky!
Shane Richie, Christie Goddard |
Other guests on the night included Tommy 'I'm controversial me' Tiernan and Shane Richie who, we hear, thought he was back doing stand-up in Butlins and not actually introducing an award category. We're not going to slag him though as most of his relations hail from Coolock.
Michael Fassbender, Leasi Andrews |
Most of the focus at The IFTAs seemed to beam on the next hot male Irish actor to break worldwide - Michael Fassbender. Okay, so the 'Hunger' star has a lot of German blood in him, but we're claiming him as our own. Back off Fritz!
Eric Mabius |
It may have looked like the Awards last weekend were an all-Irish affair but a wee bit of Hollywood glamour was brought to the proceedings in the form of 'Ugly Betty' star Eric Mabius... Aint he just hunky folks?
Brendan Gleeson |
For some yet-to-be-revealed reason Jonathan Rhys Meyers couldn't attend the awards last weekend but at least our big cuddly Brendan Gleeson was there flying the flag... Good man Brendan.
