Spielberg
locked in distribution battle...
A
producer of the Irish comedy An Everlasting Piece
is accusing Steven Spielberg of trying to kill
the film to win favour with the UK Government. Spielberg
is to receive an honorary knighthood at the end of
this month for his services to the British film industry.
But the Belfast producer Jerome O'Connor alleges
he and his film-distributing DreamWorks studio
trimmed its promotional budgets because it deals with
Britain's role in Northern Ireland in the 1980s.
"It's
so obvious they're trying to bury the movie,'' O'Connor
tells the New York Post. "They're doing
everything possible to make sure it doesn't work.''
Three weeks before it was meant to open, Spielberg
partner Jeffrey Katzenberg told the director
Barry Levinston to cut the politics.
Katzenberg
carries considerable clout in Hollywood. He said the
film's release pattern was slashed at the last moment
from 750 cinemas across the United States to just
eight.
DreamWorks
publicity spokeswoman, Diana Loomis, said:
"No one at DreamWorks has heard from Mr O'Connor
on this or any other issue. "Everyone involved
with this movie has been aware from the start that
it was always on a limited-release pattern.''
