Gambon's
Variety Award retracted...
The
Dublin born star of the Singing Detective Sir
Michael Gambon was overjoyed when he scooped
a top showbiz acting award - only to discover that
it was withdrawn because he was too busy to attend
the ceremony. The Irish actor was delighted when the
Variety Club of Great Britain contacted him
to say he had won their best actor 2000 award. But
when his busy schedule meant he was unable to receive
the award in person, he was told the honour was being
given to someone else.
Sir
Michael is currently working on the film Charlotte
Gray with Cate Blanchett as well as appearing
in the West End in Harold Pinter's The
Caretaker.
He
said: "I was delighted to hear that I had got
the award but then they said because I couldn't attend
the ceremony they were going to give it to someone
else. I was just stunned. It seemed a little unfair
that I couldn't get the honour because I was too busy.
It is quite usual that people who can't attend ceremonies
have video clips of their acceptance speeches."
But
the Variety Club's Chief Barker, composer Tony
Hatch, said he was puzzled by Sir Michael's reaction.
"We have an agreement with the BBC that
two out of the 12 winners can have video acceptance
speeches. An award show without winners present starts
to become a bit of a non-runner. We explained this
to Sir Michael and he seemed very understanding. If
we had realised he felt like this we would have tried
to work something out."
The
Variety Club award panel is meeting to discuss a new
recipient for the award and Mr Hatch said it would
have to be someone who could attend the ceremony.
The Variety Club of Great Britain showbiz awards will
be held in London on February 13.
