Sean Penn to play Brian Boru...

Hollywood hellraiser Sean Penn is on his way to Ireland to kick out the Vikings for the second time since the year 1014. According to reports in the Irish press the Oscar nominated star is set to make a Millennium version of Braveheart based on the life of the ancient Irish King Brian Boru.

The actor who was once married to Madonna is believed to be delving into Irish history and now wants to make a Hollywood movie based on the King who kicked the Vikings out of Ireland 1000 years ago.

The actor has just finished directing one of his own film The Pledge. The Irish newspaper the Sunday World says that casting has already started in LA for the movie and with the success of both Gladiator and Braveheart it looks like Sean's idea of directing a Irish historical epic, may be perfectly timed.

The tale goes that Brian Boru chased out the Vikings with an army of 30,000 men in a massive battle in Dublin in 1014. Boru was killed but the Vikings fled back to Denmark. But, before Boru passed on he beheaded one of the Vikings and cut the legs of another.

This will no doubt make a good ending to Penn's movie...
