Cate Goes From Guerin to Mata Hari...

Director Robert Altman and Veronica Guerin actor Cate Blanchett are teaming up for a new movie about the spy Mata Hari.

According to The Hollywood Reporter this is the actress's first movie since recently finishing her role in Dublin of the slain reporter Veronica Guerin.

Both stars have recently been nominated for Oscars for their big-screen productions - Altman for directing last year's Gosford Park and Blanchett for her role in Elizabeth - but this time they are making a film for the small screen.

Altman will direct the feature Mata Hari for American network HBO while Blanchett will play the exotic and notorious real-life First World War spy, whose name is synonymous with espionage.

Altman says he has always intended the project to be a vehicle for Blanchett and decided that HBO offered the perfect outlet for it.

He is planning a three-hour tale. "To do it the way I plan on doing it would not fit a theatrical release because it would be too long a picture," Altman explains. "It's such a big undertaking that if we did it at HBO, we could do it in a full three hours. It pleases my soul to be able to go after an audience that will get what we are doing."

Australian Blanchett plays the title role in the upcoming film Veronica Guerin about the murdered Irish journalist.

She also appeared last year in Charlotte Gray and plays Elf queen Galadriel in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
