Bulter puts himself in Bond's sights...

The Scottish actor Gerard Butler, who only weeks ago finished filming Reign of Fire in Dublin, is being lined up as the next James Bond according to quips made by the actor - supposedly when Irish man Pierce Brosnan retires from the role.

Word on the Hollywood circuit is that Barbara Broccoli, the producer of the Bond movies has asked the actor to take over the role when Brosnan retires.

Butler who is 32 confirmed to the press that Broccoli has asked him to take over after Brosnan retires from the role. Butler has been hanging around Dublin for the past few months and playing the real life James Bond Casanova with the Dublin women.

Speaking to the press he said "It's very flattering and I can't say much more then that. I was getting phone calls from LA saying that it was on CNN that I had been named as the new Bond. Since then I've been getting calls from everywhere from Israel to South Africa."

Butler also said on GMTV: "I've chatted with Barbara Broccoli and she knows that I'll only do it if Ann Widdecombe can be my Bond girl. She's off thinking about that right now."

This story has been refuted on the Web as a off hand joke made by Butler but he certainly could be in the line-up after Brosnan hangs up his vodka martinis.
