Elvis
goes back to college...
Irish resident and singer Elvis Costello, has
been appointed to the newly created position of artist
in residence at the University of California in LA.
The
music legend of Irish lineage will participate in
several major projects throughout the internationally
themed 2001-2002 season at the university's concert
hall, starting with a collaboration with the Charles
Mingus Orchestra in September.
"I
won't be moving into the dorms," Costello tells
the Los Angeles Daily News, "but I will be spending
time on campus. It's going to give me a venue for
some ideas and concepts I've been thinking about,
if not actually working on."
David Sefton, the university's new performing arts
director who chose Costello for the inaugural chair,
says: "Elvis is pop's true renaissance man. He's
done this phenomenal range of stuff and the great
thing is he's prepared to stick his neck out where
lots of other people wouldn't."
