U2's
Freedom up in smoke...
In
an exclusive interview for showbizireland.com
Sean Kenny the former Labour Lord Mayor of Dublin
has confirmed that U2 (who received the Freedom of
Dublin City on the 18th of March) were originally
nominated in 1991 by him for the Freedom of the City
honour.
Kenny
also claims that it was Fianna Fail who objected to
the band getting the honour. "I did nominate
U2 in 1991 but Fianna Fail objected and we needed
an unanimous vote. So they missed out." However,
showbizireland.com has learned from sources
close to the council that the band may have missed
the honour due to stories at the time relating to
band member Adam Clayton and an alleged drug incident.
"One of the band at the time were involved with
something to do with drugs and Fianna Fail objected
due to this." The source claimed.
A number of Fianna Fail members on the council at
the time have told showbizireland.com they
had no recollection of U2 ever being nominated officially.
Speaking about the incident in The Sunday Independent
newspaper U2 member The Edge explained that the band
has heard they were being considered for the honour
but some how it never worked out.
"We
were told the band we're being considered for the
Freedom of the city. It's just something that got
back to us. But, that's all we heard about it until
now. We were probably speaking out about something
at the time anyway and their was talk that someone
had objected. We are just really honoured to have
got it now."
