Forgotten at Irish Music Awards...
Lead by the Irish comedian Ed Byrne the re-vamped
Meteor Irish Music Awards kicked off on Friday
night in Dublin’s Point Theatre. It was a night
for the cream of the Irish entertainment industry
were out in force except for Dundalk supergroup The
Corrs who were the only major Irish act not to
pick up one single award.
Irish
supergroup U2 picked up three awards while Ronan
Keating, Westlife and Samantha Mumba
all picked up one. The Corrs were only nominated for
one award but lost out to U2.

Starting
procedures in the Point on Friday night were Hollywood
star Jason Patric (star of Speed 2 and
Rush) and Irish actress Flora Montgomery
who presented Ronan Keating with the award for Best
International male award.

This
was followed by a performance of "This Years Love"
by David Gray. Speaking to ShowBizIreland.com
exclusivly the couple said they were really looking
forward to performing in Dublin's Gate Theatre
from next week when the couple take to the stage in
a showing of the play "Bash."

Next
up was Best International Dance act which was
won by the English group Morcheeba who also
performed. This was followed later in the evening
by performances by Sinead O’Connor, JJ72, Atomic
Kitten, Gabrielle, Ash and Emmylou Harris.

The
performance of the night came from the legend Elton
John who sang his hit "Your Song" with
Ronan Keating and whose charity, the Elton John Aids
Foundation, were the main benefactors of the night
as well as the IRMA trust.
Other
winners on the night included DJ Mark McCabe
who won an Irish male award leaving Ronan Keating,
Stephen Gately, Mikey Graham and Paul Brady
to lick their wounds.
The
young Dubliner was also celebrating after sighing
a six album deal earlier on Friday with Universal
records.
The
Best Newcomer award went to the young Irish
band JJ72 who took time out in the press room
to criticise Westlife saying "if a Westlife CD is
all the imagination and 11 year old has I don’t know
what happening."
Best
International songwriter went to Welsh singer
David Gray, the Lifetime achievement award went to
Christy Moore while the contribution to Irish
Music award went to Boyzone, Westlife and Samantha
Mumba manager Louis Walsh. Walsh took his
time in the press room to criticise certain bands
who have attacked his acts in the past and also took
time to attack Hot Press magazine and those
he called "journalists who were mostly failed rock
managers and artists."
This
was followed by U2 who picked up the Best Irish
band award which was picked up by boxer Steve
Collins as the band are currently in America.
Elton
John also picked up an Humanitarian Award for
his work for charities connected with AIDS.

Irish Songwriting award went to Bono and
The Edge from U2. Best Female went to
Sharron Shannon, Best International Album
for a male went to David Gray, Best International
Female went to Whitney Houston, Best
selling Irish female went to Samantha Mumba who
was unable to pick up her award in person as she is
in LA making her first film role in the new Stephen
Spielberg film, The Time Machine.
Best International album went to The Beatles
while the Best International single for a male
went to Eminem for "Stan".
This
was followed by the Best International single for
a female which went to Leann Rimes and
the Best Group single went to the Bloodhound
Gang for "The Bad Touch."
