Alternative night for Miss Ireland...

In a blaze of extravagance the winner of the Alternative Miss Ireland 2002 was announced on Sunday night in Dublin's Olympia Theatre.

Hosted by the fabulous Miss Panti, the 'beauty' pageant saw 10 contestants strut their stuff, each hoping to win the coveted title.

The excited audience cheered their support for the participants, and cheered louder each time, as every one was wilder than the last.

Third place went to Miss Monique, a truly entertaining fire eating showgirl from South Africa.

Coming second was Miss Chief Random Zappette, a white faced guy in a tutu, who raised tremendous laughter from the crowd.

In the end though there could only be one winner...

Miss Sid Viscous, a drag king with a highly imaginative finale, which incorporated a specially produced video backdrop, was crowned Alternative Miss Ireland 2002.

Also among the entries were Miss Titney Queers and Nuala Luna.

An audience member told ShowBizIreland.com, "It's always a mad night. The contestants put in a huge amount of effort, which makes it even more special. I look forward to it every year".

Tickets to the After Shock sponsored event were sold out well in advance, helping to raise much needed funds for charities Open Heart House and Cairde.
