Day-Lewis may succumb to Scorsese...

DANIEL DAY-LEWIS is reportedly on the verge of succumbing to filmmaker MARTIN SCORSESE'S months-long campaign to persuade him to star with LEONARDO DICAPRIO and LIAM NEESON in his new movie The Gangs of New York.

If the British actor (who now lives in Co Wicklow in Ireland)accepts the role it will be his first film work since The Boxer four years ago.

For the past few years Day-Lewis has been living between Ireland and Italy where he has been training with an Italian cobbler to make shoes.

Anyway, the 60 million pound Gangs of New York centres on attempts by Amsterdam, a gangster played by Leonardo DiCaprio, to unite warring ethnic street gangs in 19th Century New York.

Scorsese, who previously directed Day-Lewis in The Age of Innocence, wants him to play a gangster named Bill the Butcher, a role in which ROBERT DE NIRO was originally cast but later rejected.
