Branagh's
Nazi Nightmares...
Irish
born actor Kenneth Branagh found it hard to
rid himself of the shadow of Nazi leader Reinhard
Heydrich, whom he portrays in Conspiracy, a film
based on Hitler's plan to kill 11 million Jews. "Robert
De Niro once said to me, 'You need to save your
energy for when the camera rolls', but in this case
I found it very hard to get away from Heydrich,''
said Branagh.
"I did not sleep very well." The film, which
also stars Stanley Tucci as Adolf Eichmann
and Colin Firth as Reich Interior Minister
Dr Wilhelm Stuckart, is based on the Wannsee
Conference, held near Berlin in January 1942 when
Hitler's "Final Solution" was set
in motion. "You've got this group of somewhat
ordinary civil servants speaking in a tone that is
chilling. I read the script with horror, while remaining
almost dumbstruck that it's not fiction," said
Branagh, who is in America promoting the HBO-financed
project.
