Pumpkins to retire from rock...
The Smashing Pumpkins played their final Irish show ever on Monday night to a packed house in the Olympia theatre. Word in the Irish pop world is that after the American band's Irish concert three years ago involved the death of a young fan they wanted to finished their career when it all started.
The accident damaged their reputation forever.
The Irish concert was one of the last the band will ever do. They have confirmed they will break up once their further two gigs in South Africa and two in Chicago are over.
The rock group sparked a major tightening of security at concerts after the death of a young fan over three years ago when 16-year-old Cork teenager Bernadette O'Brien lost her life. She was tragically crushed to death at a concert which had, by all accounts, got out of hand.
The tragedy so affected Pumpkins' lead singer Billy Corgan he almost retired from the entertainment business immediately. Now that feeling has obviously come back and the band will be no more.
Video evidence at the subsequent inquest into the death of Bernadette revealed how the singer had pleaded repeatedly with the audience to move back and relieve the crush on people at the front of the hall who had fallen.
