MTV Awards live update...
There
was controversy last night in Stockholm at the 2000
MTV awards by European artists who were shocked
after artists from America cleaned up on all the awards
with only three exceptions. Irish boy band Westlife
won the Best UK and Ireland (as we predicted)
act but snubbed the awards after not being asked to
perform.
“The
band were asked to present an award but not asked
to perform. So they will not be here tonight to pick
up their award,” the bands manager Louis Walsh
told ShowBizIreland.com last night backstage
in Stockholm where he was a guest of Ronan Keating
one of the performers at the awards.
Walsh
continued “It supposed to be the European Music
Awards but all the winners are from America and
South America. While Westlife have seven numbers ones
and have not even been asked to perform. Figure that
out.”
However
the Irish were out flying the flag in the form of
super-rockers U2 who opened the show with their
current number one Beautiful Day to over 10,000
of an audience and one billion viewers world-wide.
The
award winners included Best Male went to Ricky
Martin, Best R&B act went to Jennifer
Lopes who are both from South America. Best
Rock went to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers
while the Best Group award went to the Backstreet
Boys both from the America.
Following
that the Best New Act award went to Blink
182, Best Dance to the queen of pop Madonna,
while the Best Video award went to Moby
for his video Natural Blues.
More
American acts followed with the Best Hip Hop
awards going to Eminem and then another award
the Best Female which went to Madonna.
Best Album went to Eminem to make it
his second for the evening for his new album.
The came the biggest awards Best Song for 2000
which went to Robbie Williams for Rock DJ.
The
last and the most controversial award went to the
Best UK and Ireland act which was won by Westlife,
who snubbed the awards.
The
only other English act to win apart from Robbie Williams
was the Best Pop award which was picked up
by the All Saints.
