Day
Lewis speaks out...
Oscar winning actor Daniel Day Lewis has spoken for
the first time about how he came back from being a
recluse in his secret Irish home to making The
Gangs of New York with Martin Scorsese.
"When
Martin started to talk is was not without a sense
of dread that I felt drawn back into his orbit. I
was thinking oh my god don't lead me back into this.
But, to my mind it was a very great privilege to be
asked once in one's lifetime to work with this man.
If he goes looking for you a second time it's almost
impossible to turn away."
The
star's career took a turn for the worst after the
movie he made with the Irish director Jim Sheridan,
The Boxer dived at the box office. After hits
such as The last of the Mohicans and My
Left Foot for which he won his Oscar films insiders
worried that the star would totally turn his back
on the movie industry forever after he turned down
role after role.
So
does he have any regrets about the path his choose?
"The number of times people have told me I'd ruin
my career by turning down something is pathetic" said
the actor who's first film for Scorsese was the 1993
classic The age of Innocence.
And
is the industry different and is he finding it easier?
"Nothing happened to me during the course of filming
that made me think why don't I do this more often.
I was just how I remembered it and probably a lot
harder."
Working
with stars such as Liam Neeson and Leoardo
Di Caprio was not too interesting for the star
who claims they never got to know each other really.
"Everyone
is living in their own private purgatory and trying
to deal with it as best they can" the actor said.
