Julia
Roberts Interview...
Hollywood icon Julia Roberts at the release
of her amazing new comedy American Sweethearts
this week in Ireland.
Here
she talks on the film, her co-stars and playing the
role of Kiki alongside Catherine Zeta Jones.
Q:
How did you feel on playing the role of Kiki, seems
as in the movie she is Catherine Zeta Jones' long
suffering sister?
Julia
Well, you know, Kiki really?because when it was sent
to me, I was asked to look at Gwen, um, the part of
Gwen. And as I was reading it, it was so funny and
just seemed so, um, kind of whimsical and farcical.
But the thing that stood out to me was Kiki. And what's
this little secret girl all about? So, when I called
Joe (Director Joe Roth) back and I said, "You
know, just, it's a really funny script and, you know,
what would you think about me playing Kiki?" And he
went for it, so here we are.
Q:
How did you feel about the rest of the cast on the
movie?
Julia
Well, but what's what, you know, Joe, I mean, I don't
know how he pulled this cast together. It's such a
great cast. From Chris Walken to Seth Green,
I mean, everybody is just so good in what they're
executing. And when I saw it, I was actually really
kind of beamed with pride with what we'd achieved.
And not that I didn't think we couldn't achieved it,
but I was really pleased with us. And I think that
ultimately, if you go, um, at the very least, you'll
walk out with a smile on your face.
Q: How did you feel on the comedy role?
Julia
I think we struck a very delicate, accurate balance,
because we're silly. I mean, we're out there. We're
silly. We, we, we mean to be silly and to make people
laugh. But I think that all comedy comes from truth.
So, if you have a true core and then dress it up kind
of goofy, that's funny.
Q:
So how did you feel about working with the films
director Joe Roth?
Julia Well, you know, Joe has directed movies
before. And I've known Joe since I was a teenager,
dare I say. And, um, I've always been very aware of
his desire to, you know, direct more movies. And when
he said, you know, "I'd like to direct this movie,"
I was totally behind it, because I believe in anybody,
you know. Whatever tiny little voice is saying, "Oh,
do this other little thing" you know. I always wanted
him to do it. When he said "This is what I want to
do," I was so happy to not only support it, but then
participate in it.
Q:
How about the rest of the cast?
Julia
There's just things to play and that's the most fun
and that's the best bit. And at the end of the day,
to walk out saying "You know, these people that I
work with are doing a really good job." The fact that
we all came out of this madness better friends than
we ever went into it, I think speaks volumes for what
an ensemble really means.
