Scorsese
to cut Gangs of NY...
Martin Scorsese is to cut 30 minutes from his
three-hour Irish gangster epic Gangs of New York
starring Liam Neeson before it is shown to
audiences.
The release of the highly anticipated period drama,
which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Irish actor
Liam Neeson and the Irish based actor Daniel
Day Lewis, is also being delayed until next spring.
However, it may open briefly in New York and Los Angeles
this year to qualify for Oscar consideration.
Harvey
Weinstein, head of Miramax, who ordered
the cuts to be made, says the original December 21
release date of the film would be "inappropriate"
because of the plotline. "Our decision to postpone
the film's release is based on its setting in downtown
Manhattan during the Civil War in the midst of the
1860s draft riots - one of the most difficult and
challenging times in American history," says
Weinstein.
