Richard Harris Dies Aged 72...

Actor, hell-raiser, hard-drinker, rugby fanatic and Limerick man, Richard Harris has shuffled off his mortal coil and passed into movie legend.

The quintessential Irish man, Harris died on the 25th of October of Hodgkin's Disease in a London hospital. The sad news was announced by his three sons, "their beloved father" will be greatly missed.

Twice Oscar nominated Harris will be remembered as a no-nonsense straight talker that openly spoke his mind and admitted to the faults that endeared him to millions of people worldwide.

Harris came from a stock of hard drinking, hard playing actors that shook up Hollywood with tales of woe that would make Ozzy Osbourne blush.

Tributes to the man have been flooding in from celebrities and stars from all over the world.

In a month that has also seen the passing of Derek Bell - versatile harpist from the Chieftains - October 2002 has been a sad month for Irish Arts.

After a funeral service Richard's family will take the ashes back to his home in the Bahamas. Memorial services are to be staged later in London and Dublin.
