Westlife
6th No.1 + The Corrs...
Ireland's favourite boyband Westlife last night
made British pop history by becoming the first act
to have six consecutive number one singles. The group's
new song - Against All Odds, recorded with
American singer Mariah Carey - went straight
to the top of the charts. The single is a cover version
of a track written and released by Phil Collins
in 1984.
In
a statement, the Irish group said "We're all
over the moon to be breaking our own record of five
number ones by getting six. "Working with Mariah,
our favourite singer of all time, is a dream come
true. "It's extra special for us to be breaking
this record with her."
Carey originally recorded the song for her most recent
album but after meeting Westlife in Los Angeles and
hearing their work she suggested they collaborate
on a new version. She said in a break from filming
the film All That Glitters in Toronto: "Westlife
have been fantastic. They were fun to work with and
we just clicked creatively. "I'm really thrilled
that Against All Odds has gone straight to number
one. It was always one of my favourite Phil Collins
songs growing up."
The
Corrs also grabbed the headlines this week as
their album "In Blue" entered the U.S. album
charts at #21. It sold over 46,000 copies in its first
week.
"In
Blue" has sold over 3 million copies outside the U.S.
The album hits # 1 in Portugal, making them the 18th
country with a # 1 album. "In Blue" is currently 6
times Platinum in Ireland, 2 in the UK, Austria, Denmark
& Singapore. Platinum in Germany, Spain, Austria,
Belgium, Italy, Norway, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand,
Switzerland. & Gold in Japan, Canada, France, Holland,
Sweden, Portugal, Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong
Kong.
The
new single "Irresistible" will be released
on October 20th.
