Aussie
& Irish stars at Ned Kelly Premiere...
Last night saw the Irish Premiere of Ned Kelly,
a movie which is very close to every Irish person's
heart mainly because its an Irish hardship story set
in Australia.
Laurence
Kinlan at Ned Kelly Premiere
Ned
Kelly is a movie about an Australian outlaw but it
could have as easily been set in Ireland at the same
time around 1880 as its main focus is Irish oppression
at the hands of the British.
Laurence
Kinlan and Ioan Gruffudd
It
shows the unlikely emergence of an Australian/Irish
icon through a series of events which brought Ned
Kelly and his compatriots into direct conflict with
Queen Victoria's constabulary.
Joel
Edgerton and Cathy Freeman
One
of the main characters and one if the notorious Kelly
Gang in the movie is Dubliner Laurence Kinlan
who plays Ned's brother Dan Kelly. Laurence
told ShowBiz Ireland that he is off to LA soon
looking for work after his convincing costarring role.
The
Big Bear Brendan Gleeson
Also
at the Premiere was Australian actor Joel Edgerton
who plays traitor Aaron Sherrit in the movie.
Joel is in Ireland at the moment, with his Olympic
Gold Medal winning girlfriend Cathy Freeman,
filming King Arthur.
Ray
Stevenson
The
movie itself has a strong cast with Heath Ledger
playing Ned and Orlando Bloom playing outlaw
and playboy Joe Byrne.
Although
all characters give convincing performances and the
Irish accents aren't too bad the film is very uninvolving
and the harsh context in which Ned and his clan found
themselves wasn't fully established.
It
is rumoured that Neil Jordan, who was also
in attendance at the movie, is going to make his own
version of this legendary tale and by the general
consensus of reviews he has a lot to work with.
Also
at the premiere were King Arthur cast Ray Stevenson,
Sean Gilder, Ioan Gruffudd, and Joel Edgerton
Irish actor Brendan Gleeson and chat show host
Pat Kenny.
