Happy Happy Arthur Scargill Day...
We know. All that Christy Moore hype over Arthur's Day this week coz of all the pints of Arthur-Scargill getting consumed and vommed back-up mainly in the Camden Street area of the city. Happily, this year seemed to be a lot less To-Arthur-y and more about the live choons banging out of the boozers...

The first Arthur's Day was a great marketing scoop for Guinness. Brilliant! After that, all the subsequent others just felt like some crazed over-the-top national student drinks promotion day. Most people too pissed to work out it was nothing more than a marketing ploy... A good one, at that.

This year, the hangover has cleared and with sober heads the whole Arthur's Day phenomenon has been questioned. And rightly so... Bad enough we have to wade through rivers of puke the day after St Paddy's, nevermind after a day that celebrates nothing more than selling Guinness at one minute to six bells.

Thanks to Christy Moore and some exhausted folk at A&E, Arthur's Day was under the scope this week. Ok. It's great to get people into bars listening to live music but with first drinks downed just before 6pm, this poor town gets up-ended come the early hours.

This year seems to have people at least discussing the knock-on effects of a society being partially defined by our alcohol consumption and although it all can't be blamed on Arthur Guinness, having an alcoholic drink as a big part of Irish identity around the world may not be how we all want to be perceived... Very few of us even drink the black stuff.

Anyhoo, we didn't get around all the bars this year. Far too messy. Thus, our lazy snap-hounds just stood outside The Morrison Hotel and papped the likes of The Script, Emeli Sande, Iggy Azalea, and others as they came and went to their super secret gigs.

So there you have it folks, Arthur's Day 2013... We're hoping there's a place for this amazing Guinness promotion going forward, just, we're kinda with Christy on this one... It gets really messy out there, long after revellers have raised an early glass To Arthur.
