Just
when you thought you'd had enough of the teen slasher movies
along comes another! It's summer vacation (isn't it always)
and college boy Lewis (Paul Walker) has planned to drive
cross-country to pick up his dream girl Venna (Leelee Sobieski)
from her college. The
boy is so smitten that he even buys a car for the trip.
All
is well until Lewis hears his older brother, Fuller (Steve
Zahn), has been arrested in Salt Lake City, and, being the
good person he is, makes a detour to bail him out.
Not
having seen each other in a while, there is a bit of apprehension
between the two - or perhaps a clash of personalities, Lewis
being quiet and unassuming, Fuller loud and boisterous.
Of course it's Fuller who is the cause of the ensuing trouble.
He buys a CB radio and, while fooling about with it, persuades
Lewis to play a practical joke on a trucker.
Pretending
to be a girl calling herself Candy Cane, Lewis arranges
to meet the trucker, known as Rusty Nail, in a motel. Expecting
a night of passion, Rusty is none too pleased to discover
he is the subject of a prank. This is where things heat
up.
The
boys realise that they have messed with the wrong guy and
hope that they have heard the last of Rusty Nail. Of course
they haven't and the subsequent thrilling chases will have
you hanging off the edge of your seat, as the revenge seeking
Rusty (who we never see) reeks havoc.
It sounds like a typical teen thriller, but it is better
than the other dross in that the characters are fairly believable.
They react to situations in a way that you or I might do
and not in a stupid run-into-the-woods-on-your-own way we've
seen previously.
It
is also quite humorous, thanks mainly to Fuller who has
some witty one liners. However, for what is generally a
great movie full of suspense, the ending is too abrupt.
It's as if the scriptwriters realised they had enough material
for a sequel as opposed to a good ending.
We'll just have to wait for Roadkill 2... Then 3.
Verdict:
(4 stars out of 5)
Roadkill
opens nationwide on the 26th of April.
