Sean Brosnan, Pierce Brosnan's 16-year-old son who suffered severe injuries in a car accident Saturday, is expected to make a full recovery, the actor said Monday. The young Brosnan was hospitalized Saturday with a broken pelvis, a ruptured bladder, after the driver of the sport utility vehicle in which he was riding lost control and plunged down a 200-foot embankment above the Malibu / Calif., coast.

Publicist Dick Guttman said doctors expect Sean Brosnan to be discharged from the hospital within a week. "They said there was a very excellent prognosis for a full recovery," he added. Initial fears that the 16-year-old may have been paralyzed have been dismissed, according to Guttman, who said that although he was not sure whether Sean fractured his vertebra, "he's definitely not paralyzed."

In a statement issued through his publicist Monday, the elder Brosnan expressed his "deepest thanks" to the emergency personnel who rescued his son and his friends "from the jaws of death" and to the doctors and nurses who treated his son at a Los Angeles hospital. "Because of the aforementioned men and women, I am assured of my son's recovery and that he will have a full life as a result of their skill and nurturing, their deep compassion and caring," the star of several James Bond movies said.

The driver of the SUV, James Hall, 19, faces felony drunken driving charges, the California Highway Patrol said. Although Hall was initially reported to be a nephew of the actor, Guttman said the driver is not a relation but a friend of the actor's son.

Four other teenagers, several of whom the CHP said had been drinking, were in the car at the time of the accident and suffered minor injuries. Only Brosnan, who was initially described by authorities as being 13 years old, was hospitalized.

Pierce Brosnan was at his recently purchased Malibu home when the accident occurred before dawn Saturday. He raced to his son's side and accompanied him on the helicopter ride to the hospital, holding his hand all the way, according to reports. Brosnan skipped a scheduled Earth Day appearance to be with his injured son, although the actor's fiancée, Keely Shaye Smith, went on without him.

Brosnan and Smith have a 3-year-old son named Dylan. Sean's mother, Cassandra Harris, died in 1991. According to the New York Post, Pierce's wedding to Smith, which had been planned for next month at Slane Castle in Ireland, has been postponed indefinitely.

However, Guttman tells columnist Jeannie Williams that he believes the wedding will take place.
