Our girl Kristin top of the models...

The world's top catwalks are now a step closer for a teenager from Dublin's Liberties. Kristin Hawthorne (18) whose campaign was run right here on ShowBizIreland.com won a key distinction in a recent major modelling competition. She scooped top prize for the largest region in the competition. However the overall winner was Alaina Davies from Somerset, England.

Kristin, who intends to pursue her modelling interests, also plans to start college in September. She was encouraged to enter the competition after her mother saw an advertisement in a paper.

18-year-old waitress Alaina was the one chosen from the 13 finalists to make her debut at London Fashion Week in February.

At a special photocall for the girls yesterday, supermodel Yasmin Le Bon ... one of the judges in the Ariel Model 2001 event ... said: "We were all really impressed by how confident they were. It is a very grown-up industry and you are required to be confident enough to travel the globe on your own."

The 36-year-old supermodel launched her career in the industry at the age of 19 when she walked into the offices of Models 1.

Alaina will now spend the next five weeks undergoing a transformation. She will be taught how to sashay down a 200ft catwalk for designer Matthew Williamson while wearing his autumn and winter collection.
