Gabriel
Byrne seeks political roles...
Irish actor Gabriel
Byrne has admitted that political roles are
top of his agenda and he would love to play the role
of the former Irish Taoiseach Charlie Haughey.
"The Charlie Haughey story is about power, about sex,
about loyalty, about friendship. It is about ethics
and it is about history mortality and the fleeting
and mercurial nature of the personal and the political."
He went on, "and at the center of that you have a
charismatic cock of the walk. I have always said that
the Charlie Haughey story would make a great movie.
Cromwell is an amazing story too. I would love
to play him. Charles Stuart Parnell's life
is another great story about politics about a man
brought down. He is a tragic hero. One of the architects
of modern Ireland. I would not want to direct it.
I'd love to play him in something."
The
star also admitted that he may have made some good
films and some bad ones but none were done on purpose.
"Everybody
has been in bombs. I have never taken up a script
and said this is a shit script. I am going to do it.
Every script that I have done has been a good script
and what happens between that and he end nobody can
predict."
But,
in the end the star admits he is an Irishman first
and an actor second.
"I
have always thought of myself as an actor who is from
Dublin, who just happens to work in various places."
