Irish
'Goodfellas' in trouble...
The new Martin Scorsese & Liam
Neeson movie, which has been billed as the
'Irish goodfellas', is in sever trouble after going
over budget and falling behind schedule.
The
film should have been released a year ago, but has
been plagued by setbacks, which have seen the costs
rocket past the $100 million mark.
Starring Irish actors Liam Neeson, Brendan Gleeson,
Liam Carney and young Harry Potter star
Devon Murray, Gangs of New York has
seen awful weather conditions and film union problems
threaten its release.
"It has been so long now that some of us are seriously
wondering if this film will ever be released. Miramax
want it to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival
this summer - but none of us can actually see that
happening", said a film insider.
Another
delay has been the refusal of Scorsese to cut the
film to less than 3 hours. The insider added: "Martin
seems determined that everyone will do things his
way and god knows what it will end up costing when
it is finally finished. It's been a pet project of
his for so long that he wants it to be bigger than
Goodfellas and Raging Bull put together".
Gangs
of New York is based on Herbert Asbury's novel
by the same name. Set between 1846 and 1863, in New
York's suburbs, the movie tells the story of the war
between two rival gangs of Irish immigrants, Catholic
and Protestant.
Liam
Neeson, currently starring in The Crusible
on Broadway, plays Priest Vallon in
the movie.
