gives up whip for Neeson...
Irish
actor Liam Neeson has persuaded screen legend
Harrison Ford to donate a cracking gift for
a charity auction to help the fight against Aids in
Africa which the Irish actor is organising. The Indiana
Jones star has donated the bullwhip which he used
in all three of the adventure movies. The item is
just one of hundreds of pieces of movie memorabilia
which has been donated by Hollywood celebrities for
the charity auction.
Among the other celebrity pieces up for grabs are
a trademark Sir Michael Caine raincoat from
the film Hannah and her Sisters and the outfit
worn by Welsh star Catherine Zeta Jones in
The Mask of Zorro. Mel Gibson's sword
from Braveheart and Julia Roberts' wedding
dress from The Runaway Bride have also been
donated.
Neeson launched the auction, which will take place
in New York on March 6, last November by offering
the light sabre which he used in the Star Wars
prequel, The Phantom Menace.
Since
then, a large number of stars have been moved by the
plight of those suffering from Aids in Africa and
have offered items for auction.
Movie
Action For Children is hoping to raise around $3.5
million to pay for drugs which will stop mothers passing
on HIV to their children.
Neeson,
who is a special patron of UNICEF in Ireland,
said was delighted with the response he had received
from people in the film business. He said: "I
am genuinely stunned and humbled by the generosity
of my colleagues in the business. Many have donated
items they intended to keep forever. "These are
really pieces that money can't buy, and I'm delighted
that everyone has rallied round for such a good cause.''
Other
stars, not from the mainstream film world have also
become involved in the auction. Pop star Michael
Jackson has donated a coat and boxer Sugar
Ray Leonard is offering a pair of his gloves.
