Special Olympics Comes to Town...

Celebrities are like buses in Dublin, you wait for ages for one to come along and then tones of them turn up at once! The Special Olympics Summer Games have come to town...

What a buzz there was in Dublin over the weekend when the city saw the biggest party ever roll into town!

85,000 spectators and athletes from every country in the world poured into Croke Park stadium to witness the opening ceremony of The Special Olympics 2003 - the first time the games have been held outside the USA.

And what a ceremony it was...

Celebrities came out in force to support the Special Olympians from their respective countries.

A list names such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Colin Farrell, Nelson Mandella, U2, Pierce Brosnan, Ashley Judd, The Corrs, Ronan Keating, Roy Keane, Muhammad Ali, Heather Locklear, and Samantha Mumba, all showed their support with performances, speeches and by just being there.

So big was the show and the number of celebrities present that for the first time ever ShowBiz Ireland hasn't got enough space to post all of the photographs from the event.

But things of note on the night were:

Host Patrick Kielty managed the whole show with professionalism and confidence, Colin Farrell managed not to swear on live TV, The Corrs opening set, Riverdance's 100 dancers, messages from the Special Olympians, Roy Keane smiling, RTE's coverage, the legendary Muhammad Ali, the young girl carrying the Game's flag, U2's performance, Nelson Mandella's Bono guided entrance, the lighting of the flame, and the sheer joy on all of the special athletes' faces...

Also at the event were: Irish footballer Damien Duff, goal keeper Packie Bonner, Quincey Jones, Bon Jovi, Jean Butler, Vinny Jones, lots of the late President Kennedy's extended family, and many, many more...
