Bono
to give Turlington Away...
Supermodel Christy Turlington has asked Bono
to give her away at her wedding to fiance Ed Burns.
She made the plea to the U2 singer because
she lost her father Dwain Turlington to lung
cancer two years ago. A delighted Bono has agreed
to the request of his long-time pal and will walk
her down the aisle at the June wedding in San Francisco.
Turlington
is close friends with both Bono and his wife Ali
and has regularly stayed at their mansion in Dublin
with fellow supermodel Naomi Cambell.
She
and actor Burns got engaged after dating for three
months. 'They are both overjoyed and can't wait for
the big day,' said one friend of the couple.
Turlington
was previously in a relationship with actor Jason
Patric for five years who only finished his run
in Ireland's Gate Theatre last Saturday.
U2
GET MATCH OF THE DAY Exclusive
Eugene Masterson
SUPERGROUP U2 has won the race to pen the theme tune
for the new look 'Match of the day'.
Bono
and his band who are currently on tour in north America
- have been chosen over a string of top acts. ITV
will start screening premiership football highlights
when 'match of the day's switches from the BBC in
the Autumn and were forced to find a new theme tune
after the Beeb refused them the original because they
want to keep it for England games and FA cup matches.
ITV
insiders say they were "very impressed" with U2's
upbeat track. "We only had one small stipulation,
which was to change one line in the song, 'I'm not
a hopeless case', to something like 'I'm going to
run this race," one ITV insider told the Ireland on
Sunday newspaper.
ITV
received a good response when they approached record
companies and publishing houses last Autumn looking
for new music for their Premiership programming.
U2
were on a shortlist of more than a dozen, which also
included New York dance guru Moby, who has already
been successful for TV and films. Robbie Williams
and Mercury music prize winner Badly Drawn Boy are
also believed to have submitted tracks for consideration.
The
famous original 'Match of the day' music was composed
by Barry Stoller after being commissioned in 1964
and first used in the 70s. Larry Mullen is said to
be the most thrilled member of U2 about the news -
he regularly attends Ireland international games and
invited Roy Keane to U2's recent show in London's
Astoria.
The
other U2 members are said NOT to be big footie fans,
although Bono did attend the World Cup final in Paris
between France and Brazil.
But
to pull off the achievement of penning the theme tune
to what will be a hugely popular programme is seen
as a massive coup for the band. A U2 spokesperson
told Ireland on Sunday that they have still to be
officially informed the band has been picked. ITV
are believed to be scheduling their 'Match of the
day' for a teatime slot around 6pm on Saturday evenings,
as well as an occasion Sunday night and weekly Monday
nights highlights programme plus a show on Wednesday
night.
Des Lynam is being lined up to present the main Saturday
programme, with Gaby Yorath being given the highlights
shows. ITV has already raided most of the BBC's 'Match
of the day' back-room team for its new look version.
ITV won the rights of Premiership highlights from
the BBC for the huge sum of UK£61m a season.
