Irish
stars flunk at MTV Awards...
Ireland
failed to win one single award last night at the MTV
awards in Germany. Irish super group U2
lost all four awards they were tipped to win.
Ronan Keating and Andrea Corr were the
only two Irish pop stars who made it into the Festhalle
in Frankfurt for the awards and were not asked to
perform. In
the end the famed Irish stars were only asked to present.
U2
lost out to the American rockers Limp Bizkit
on three awards which were the Best Album awards,
the web-site award and the best group award. The
Irish rockers lost out on the best Rock album to another
American band, Blink 182.
Last
night's results will no doubt come as a shock to the
Irish music industry in a year when The Cranberries,
Westlife, U2 and The Corrs all have new
albums out.
The
awards show was watched by one billion people around
the world and was hosted by the English comedian Ali
G. But it was the pop princess Kylie Minogue
who got the biggest cheer of the night when she
opened the show with saucy dance routine and a group
of 48 dancers.
Among
the other winners were Jennifer Lopez who won
the Best Female award, Robbie Williams who
won Best Male, Anastacia who won the Best Pop
act, Eminem picked up the Best Rap award.
Craig
David picked up the Best UK and Ireland award
and also picked up the Best R&B award. Dido
won Best New Act while the Best Song award went to
Gorillaz for Clint Eastwood.
Only a few Hollywood stars who made the show which
included supermodel Claudia Schiffer, Ben Stiller
and Christina Ricci - most of the others invited
were afraid to fly.
To get the biggest act MTV were forced to fork-out
thousands and a private jet to fly REM in from
the states to ensure security.
Performances on stage last night came from a whole
host of stars including Mary J Blige, Jay Z, Travis,
Craig David, Blink 182, Dido, Depeche Mode, Basement
Jaxx and REM.
While
celebrity guests included Vinnie Jones, Atomic
Kitten, Tennis Ace Boris Becker, Emma Bunton,
Sophie Ellie Baxter, Kelis, Pink, Shaggy, the Sugababes,
Eddy Grant, Nelly Furtado and Nina Persson
from The Cardigans.
