U2
have French 'NRJ'...
France's
top pop radio station NRJ (pronounced energy,
with a French accent) announced the nominees of its
third annual music awards show at a press conference
in Paris.
The awards not only recognize French and Francophone
artists but also their international counterparts.
And Irish artists have apparently made an impact on
the French music industry as they are up for several
trophies.
U2, which boast a very devoted fan base in
France, have been nominated for three awards, the
most accumulated by an international group, while
The Cranberries and Westlife are up
for one award each.
Among those competing against the multiple-platinum
'All That You Can't Leave Behind' for Best
International Album are Jamiroquai's musical
journey 'A Funk Odyssey', Dido's 'No
Angel' and 'Discovery' by the most international
French band, Daft Punk.
Daft
Punk are also up against U2 in the Best International
Group/Duo category, as are The Cranberries, Destiny's
Child and Depeche Mode.
Nominated
for Best Website at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards,
depechemode.com is once again honored for a
possible prize as a nominee in Best Music Website
at the NRJ Awards, competing against the official
web versions of Michael Jackson, Lenny Kravitz,
Jamiroquai and MC Solaar, the only French nominee
in the category.
Nominees
U2.com and the award- winning gorillaz.com
are also up for awards in the upcoming German Online
Music Awards.
Ireland's
- or rather Europe's - biggest boy band, Westlife,
have finally made it within the rigid musical borders
of France with a nomination for Best International
Newcomer.
Other
nominees, known long ago in the rest of the world
but who are "newcomers" on French airwaves, include
Mary J. Blige, Usher and Dido, the only
"real" newcomer on the list being Billy Crawford.
The
Y2K winners of Best Group/Duo The Corrs aren't
nominated in any category this year (even Geri
Halliwell is nominated for two awards...).
Quite
popular in France, the siblings recently performed
for a small crowd of VIP's in Paris. Voted for by
fans - 350,000 votes were recorded in the 2001 edition!
- the ceremony promises to be full of surprises and
exciting performances.
It
is scheduled to take place on January 19 at the Palais
Des Festivals in glamorous Cannes, a place accustomed
to see stars each May as it plays host to the world's
biggest film festival.
Bono attended the show in 2000, where his efforts
on behalf of Jubilee 2000 earned him the Man
of the Year trophy.
