Bono & Friday open Cannes...

The 54th Cannes Film Festival starts this morning and will turn the French resort into an international showcase of film-making talent. The opening movie of this festival, Moulin Rouge has its theme song performed by Irish singer Gavin Friday and his best friend Bono.

The film is directed by Baz Luhrmann and is a love story set in the famous Parisian nightclub at the turn of the 20th century.

Nicole Kidman, who recently split with husband Tom Cruise, was due to be one of the first stars of the fortnight to walk up the famous red carpet when she attends the film's premiere at the town's Palais des Festivals.

A total of 22 films from all over the world were in competition for the prestigious Palme d'Or or Golden Palm award, this year, including productions from Japan and Iran.

Last year's winner of the best actress, the pop singer Bjork, stunned the festival moments after receiving the award by announcing her immediate retirement from the big screen.
